About Us

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Newcastle Patient Safety Research Collaboration (PSRC) carries out research with the goal of improving healthcare safety where there are inequalities for those from disadvantaged communities.

Listening to patients, public and practitioners, taking their experiences into consideration from design to evaluation, strengthens our research. Collaborating with a range of partners with expertise in the field further benefits patients and professionals.

The NIHR funds, enables and delivers world-leading health and social care research that improves people’s health and wellbeing and promotes economic growth.

ABOUT US

What do we do?

Experts from our collaboration deliver research that results in real-world change for patient safety and health outcomes for those with multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs).

We address challenges identified by the National Institute for Health and Care Research around:

Patient safety behaviours

Effective patient safety practices

Clinical risk scores

(validation, implementation and outcomes)

WHAT WE DO

Partnerships

The NIHR Newcastle PSRC is a part of the NIHR and hosted by The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with, Newcastle University; Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust; Queen Mary University of London; University of Northumbria at Newcastle and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

MORE ABOUT PSRC

Aims

NIHR PSRCs are partnerships between the NHS and universities in England to support patient safety research. The Collaborations aim to develop, validate and test innovations, approaches and interventions that have the potential to lead to improvements in patient safety and the safety of health and care services.

A key emphasis underpinning all research themes is the reduction in inequalities in the safety of healthcare. The NIHR awarded £25 million over five years from 1 April 2023 to six Collaborations across England.

Areas of Research

Four Research Areas

We improve patient safety by supporting research across several different areas.  We want that research to reflect the needs of patients, carers and clinicians. We ensure our research is relevant by involving a wide variety of people. This helps to direct the paths our research takes and also to ready the next generation of research leaders, especially in those professions who are not well represented in the research community.

We are focusing on four areas of research:

1.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and data sciences in multiple long-term conditions

2.

Safer management of polypharmacy in multiple long-term conditions

3.

Safer integrated health and social care environments

4.

Safer management of multiple long-term conditions in disadvantaged communities

Involvement

Public and patient involvement

It is important for us to capture different perspectives, with public, patients and practitioners being involved in our PSRC research. Getting valuable feedback from those with lived experience, across diverse backgrounds, allows us to tailor our work to be as effective as possible, making the most impact in improving safety in health and social care, particularly for those in underrepresented groups.
