Academic Career Development updates
Our News
The Academic Career Development (ACD) team at the NIHR Newcastle PSRC helps people working in healthcare develop their careers in clinical research by supporting people in applying for research funding, sharing ideas, and helping each other improve. We want to ensure that people from all kinds of jobs, not just doctors, can learn to be leaders in patient safety.
Our Aims
The ACD team wants people from all different backgrounds to join us. We help people just starting in research with funding opportunities to start the next stage of their careers, such as internships and associate roles, and people who have already finished their doctoral training, such as Fellowships.

The ACD team at the NIHR Newcastle PSRC helps the people who are learning with us develop their careers and keep focusing on improving patient safety. We do this by having regular development meetings to share ideas and knowledge and helping people present their research at conferences and other events. We also offer person-centred career development opportunities for registered health and care professionals and methodologists to help people progress during and beyond their awards.
Working together is key for the NIHR Newcastle PSRC. The ACD team help our trainees build relationships with large research groups and other organisations. Between the NIHR Newcastle PSRC and our partners, we have Europe’s biggest group of ageing researchers and lead centres for studying ageing, data, health habits, public health, and future health trends. These centres are known for their important work in patient safety, long-term health issues, and health differences. The ACD team use these connections to offer training and help more people learn about patient safety, as well as apply for further opportunities and fellowships.
We aim to increase the number of people applying for research funding to improve patient safety. We are particularly focused on providing opportunities for those who may not typically have access to such funding, or who may have had to pause their research due to personal reasons. At the NIHR Newcastle PSRC and within the ACD team, we are committed to ensuring that everyone has an equal chance to contribute to our mission regardless of their circumstances.
